Steampunk Pallasite Meteorite Necklace in Oxidized Sterling Silver with Uranium Glass

From deep space to the palm of your hand! This gorgeous handcrafted pendant was made with a pallasite meteorite cabochon, wrapped in solid, Sterling silver wire, uranium vaseline glass beads and upcycled stainless steel watch parts. The wire was oxidized naturally with egg yolk, then sealed in a layer of clear lacquer to protect the aged finish of the piece and to resist tarnish. This is a very large pendant, measuring 57x47x18mm (2.2" x 1.9" x 0.7") and it comes suspended on an 18" Sterling silver chain. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece and there will never be another like it!

Pallasite meteorites are composed of an iron-nickel matrix with olivine crystal inclusions (of peridot quality) scattered throughout. Researchers once thought that pallasites originated at the core-mantle boundaries of differentiated asteroids that were later shattered by impacts with other bodies. More recently, it was proposed that these are generated by the collisions of asteroids themselves.

Uranium glass fluoresces bright green under UV light and although it registers above background radiation on a Geiger counter, uranium glass is only negligibly radioactive and considered harmless. Uranium glass is often referred to as "vaseline glass" and acquired this nickname in the 1920s, given it's visual similarity to commercial petroleum jelly sold at that time. The term "vaseline glass" is still used widely in the United States and can refer to other kinds of glass that resemble it, but only glass that contains uranium fluoresces under black light, as shown in the second photo.
